Today the Ontario Government held an emergency sitting of the legislature in order to pass two pieces of legislation which would protect workers having to self quarantine/isolate amid COVID-19, as well as providing municipalities the flexibility to continue to operate and hold council. The Municipal Emergency Act, 2020 will ensure that goods are able to be seamlessly delivered to Ontario businesses throughout the shut down, making it possible for citizens to access necessary provisions. Further, this legislation makes it possible for municipalities to continue to conduct Council, local board and committee meetings electronically when faced with local and province-wide emergencies. Therefore, municipalities will be able to maintain critical functions and make decisions for citizens throughout the COVID-19 shutdowns.
