The Government of Canada announced a $40 million investment in post-secondary student learning. The funds will support the Mitacs internship program; Mitacs is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to connecting industry and post-secondary institutions.

In response to COVID-19, Mitacs will be expanding the program to allow students to partner with organizations such as hospitals, foundations, and municipal governments in addition to small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). Students at the undergraduate level and in professional programs will now be able to gain employment experience at local governments. Mitacs’ Accelerate program will facilitate direct partnerships with municipalities to address community issues related to public health, cybersecurity, climate change, and economic development. The federal funding will create 5,000 new internships that will support community responses to COVID-19.

Students from all academic disciplines, such as engineering and environmental science, can apply to help municipalities develop research and collect asset data to support asset management and climate change adaptation initiatives.
