Early this month, Canada’s First Ministers announced a $19 billion federal/provincial/territorial (FPT) Safe Restart Agreement. The federal funding will contribute to major investments in response to COVID-19 critical areas such as municipal services, healthcare, and childcare. Today, the Government of Ontario released further details surrounding the support for municipal services. The government of Ontario in partnership with the federal government is providing $4 billion in onetime assistance to Ontario’s municipalities.

Over $2 billion will help municipalities maintain critical services over the next six to eight months. The province will be working closely with its municipal partners to ensure that the funds will address the budget shortfalls related to COVID-19. The remaining $2 billion will be dedicated to public transit to help with the steep decline in revenue and to support the maintenance of safe operations. More specific details on the allocation of funds will be provided in the coming weeks.
